Apexx Akitas is an AKC-registered American Akita breeding program located in Sussex County, New Jersey, approximately two hours from most of Connecticut. We have produced 10 AKC Champions and Grand Champions to date, with three more dogs currently on the verge of finishing their titles. Every breeding dog in our program carries an AKC Championship or Grand Championship title and has passed all five OFA health clearances. We have placed over 150 American Akitas with families nationwide since 2003, including families throughout Connecticut. Our program includes a Westminster Kennel Club Best of Opposite Sex winner and a Best in Show winner at 4 months old. Connecticut families can visit our kennel, meet our dogs in person, and pick up their puppy the same day.
Apexx Akitas is one of the closest championship-level American Akita breeding programs to Connecticut, located approximately two hours from most areas of the state. With 10 AKC Champions and Grand Champions produced since 2003, including a Westminster Kennel Club Best of Opposite Sex winner, Apexx Akitas offers Connecticut families a level of breeding quality that is not available from any breeder within the state.
Connecticut does not have a large number of American Akita breeders who show their dogs in AKC conformation and complete full OFA health testing on every breeding dog. Most buyers in the state are choosing between local breeders who do not compete and do not health test, or searching online and hoping for the best. Neither option gives you what your family deserves.
Apexx Akitas is two hours from most Connecticut locations. That is closer than many breeders Connecticut families end up purchasing from after searching nationally. The difference is that when you drive to our kennel in Sussex County, you are visiting a program that has been independently verified at the highest levels of the sport.
Our program includes Grand Champion Asa, the foundation sire whose Grand Championship was earned competing against champions across the northeast. Champion Esther, who earned Best of Opposite Sex at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Champion Torro and Champion Bengal, the sire and dam of our current litter. And Champion Ash, who won Best in Show at just 4 months old against 76 entered puppies. Every one of these dogs carries full OFA clearances across hips, elbows, thyroid, eyes, and cardiac evaluations.
That level of documentation is what separates a verified breeding program from a breeder who simply owns two Akitas and decided to produce a litter. For Connecticut families investing in a dog that will be part of their household for the next 10 to 13 years, the difference matters.
Ron Durant with Apexx Akitas puppies on the kennel property in Wantage, New Jersey. Every puppy is raised with hands-on socialization from birth.
Our kennel is located in Wantage, New Jersey, in the northwest corner of the state near the New York border. Most Connecticut locations are a straightforward drive on I-84 or I-95 to Route 206. Here are approximate drive times from major Connecticut areas.
Every family that purchases an Apexx Akitas puppy is welcome and encouraged to visit the kennel before making their decision. You will meet the parents of your puppy, see the environment they are raised in, and talk with me directly about the breed, the bloodlines, and what to expect. I do not sell puppies to families I have not spoken with personally, and I prefer to meet you face to face. Connecticut families can do that in a morning drive.
There are hundreds of people listing American Akita puppies for sale online. Most of them cannot answer basic questions about their dogs' health clearances, show records, or pedigree depth. Here is what Apexx Akitas provides that the majority of breeders do not.

The American Akita is an excellent fit for Connecticut homes that offer a securely fenced yard, consistent structure, and an owner who understands that a large, intelligent, independent breed requires commitment. Connecticut's climate, property sizes, and family lifestyles are well suited to the breed's needs.
The breed does especially well in Connecticut's climate. The American Akita carries a dense double coat developed for cold weather. Connecticut winters are comfortable for this breed, and the seasonal temperature range is well within what the Akita was built to handle. Air conditioning in summer is recommended, as it is for any heavy-coated breed, but Connecticut's summers are manageable compared to southern states where heat is a genuine health concern for this breed.
Many of our Connecticut placements are families with property. The American Akita requires a securely fenced yard. This is not optional. The breed's independent nature means that even a well-trained Akita should not be trusted off-leash in an unfenced area. Connecticut's typical residential lot sizes, particularly in Fairfield County, Litchfield County, and the shoreline communities, provide the space this breed needs.

Every placement begins with our application. This is not a formality. I review every application personally and use it to understand your household, your experience with dogs, your living situation, and what you are looking for in an American Akita. Not every applicant is approved, and that is by design. The right match matters more than the sale.
After reviewing your application, I will call you directly. This is a conversation, not an interview. I want to hear about your family, answer your questions about the breed, and make sure we are both confident that an Apexx Akitas puppy is the right fit for your home. Connecticut families typically have a lot of good questions. I am happy to spend the time.
Connecticut families are strongly encouraged to visit our kennel in Wantage, New Jersey. You will meet the parents of your puppy, see how our dogs are raised, and experience their temperament firsthand. For Fairfield County families, this is a 90-minute drive. For Hartford area families, about two hours. The visit will tell you more about our program in 30 minutes than any website can.
When your puppy is ready for placement at 8 to 10 weeks, you will pick up in person. Your puppy goes home with AKC registration papers, a health certificate from our veterinarian, a feeding and care guide, and my direct phone number for lifetime support. The drive home from our kennel to Connecticut is short enough that your puppy will be in your house and settling in before the afternoon is over.
