Apexx Akitas is an AKC-registered American Akita breeding program located in Sussex County, New Jersey, approximately three and a half hours from Providence and the entire state of Rhode Island. We have produced 10 AKC Champions and Grand Champions to date, with three more dogs currently finishing their titles. Every breeding dog in our program carries an AKC Championship or Grand Championship title and has passed all five OFA health clearances. We have placed over 150 American Akitas with families nationwide since 2003. Our program includes a Westminster Kennel Club Best of Opposite Sex winner and a Best in Show winner at 4 months old. The entire state of Rhode Island is within a single day's drive of our kennel.
Apexx Akitas is one of the closest championship-level American Akita breeding programs to Rhode Island, located approximately three and a half hours south via I-95. With 10 AKC Champions and Grand Champions produced since 2003, including a Westminster Kennel Club Best of Opposite Sex winner, Apexx Akitas offers Rhode Island families a level of verified breeding quality that is not available within the state.
Rhode Island is a small state with a concentration of wealth that punches above its size. Communities in East Greenwich, Barrington, Watch Hill, Newport, and the Providence East Side represent some of New England's most established old-money families. The buyers who contact us from Rhode Island are professionals, business owners, and multi-generational families who understand quality and are not looking for the cheapest option. They want a puppy that will be a stable, healthy, well-tempered family member for the next 12 years, and they are willing to make a short drive to a breeder who can prove every claim.
Our program includes Grand Champion Asa, the foundation sire whose Grand Championship was earned competing against champions across the northeast. Champion Esther, who earned Best of Opposite Sex at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Champion Torro and Champion Bengal, the sire and dam of our current litter. And Champion Ash, who won Best in Show at just 4 months old against 76 entered puppies. Every one of these dogs carries full OFA clearances across hips, elbows, thyroid, eyes, and cardiac evaluations. Every title and every clearance is publicly verifiable.

Our kennel is located in Wantage, New Jersey, in the northwest corner of the state. The drive from Rhode Island follows I-95 South through Connecticut and New York, then west to our property. Because Rhode Island is so compact, drive times from anywhere in the state fall within a narrow range.
Every family that purchases an Apexx Akitas puppy is welcome and encouraged to visit the kennel before making their decision. You will meet the parents of your puppy, see the environment they are raised in, and talk with me directly about the breed, the bloodlines, and what to expect. Rhode Island families routinely make the trip on a Saturday morning and are back home by evening. The drive is straightforward and the payoff is meeting your puppy in person before you commit.
Rhode Island buyers who take the time to research their breeder options end up at our door for specific reasons. Here is what makes us the choice.

The American Akita is an excellent fit for Rhode Island homes with a securely fenced yard, consistent structure, and owners who understand the commitment a large, intelligent, independent breed requires. Rhode Island's coastal New England climate and mix of urban, suburban, and shoreline properties align well with what this breed needs.
Rhode Island's four-season climate works well for the American Akita. The breed carries a dense double coat developed for cold conditions, and New England winters give the dog exactly what it was built for. Coastal moderation from Narragansett Bay keeps Rhode Island winters slightly milder than inland New England, but the seasonal variation is still ideal for this breed. Summers require standard precautions any responsible owner takes with a double-coated breed: air conditioning, fresh water, and limiting outdoor activity during peak heat and humidity.

Rhode Island property configurations vary widely, from urban Providence brownstones to suburban lots in Warwick and Cranston to shoreline estates in Watch Hill and Newport. A securely fenced yard is not optional for an American Akita. The breed's independent nature means that even a well-trained dog should not be trusted off-leash in an unfenced area. Rhode Island's suburban and shoreline communities provide the kind of properties this breed needs, and the state's compact geography puts your Akita within easy reach of coastal walks, state parks, and quality veterinary care.
Temperament stability is one of the most important qualities Rhode Island buyers should demand from any American Akita breeder. Same-sex aggression is a real and well-documented trait in this breed, and it is one of the primary reasons buyers should choose a breeder who selects for temperament as rigorously as structure. Here is what stability looks like in our program.
Grand Champion Asa and his son Champion Sawtt. Two powerful intact males, father and son, showing the temperament stability that generations of selective breeding produces. This is not a coincidence. This is what happens when breeding decisions are made correctly.

Every placement begins with our application. I review every application personally and use it to understand your household, your experience with dogs, your living situation, and what you are looking for in an American Akita. Not every applicant is approved. The right match between puppy and family matters more than the sale.
After reviewing your application, I will call you directly. This is a two-way conversation about your family, your goals, and whether an Apexx Akitas puppy is the right fit for your home. Rhode Island families tend to be thoughtful and direct. I appreciate that and match it with the same level of honesty.
Rhode Island families are strongly encouraged to visit our kennel in Wantage, New Jersey. You will meet the parents of your puppy, see how our dogs are raised, and experience their temperament firsthand. This is about a 3.5-hour drive from anywhere in Rhode Island. Many families make it a day trip and tell me afterward that the visit was the deciding factor.
When your puppy is ready for placement at 8 to 10 weeks, you will pick up in person. Your puppy goes home with AKC registration papers, a health certificate from our veterinarian, a feeding and care guide, and my direct phone number for lifetime support. The drive home to Rhode Island is comfortable, and your puppy will be settling into your home before the end of the day.
