Apexx Akitas is an AKC-registered American Akita breeding program located in Sussex County, New Jersey, approximately four and a half hours from Northern Virginia and the D.C. metro area. We have produced 10 AKC Champions and Grand Champions to date, with three more dogs currently finishing their titles. Every breeding dog in our program carries an AKC Championship or Grand Championship title and has passed all five OFA health clearances. We have placed over 150 American Akitas with families nationwide since 2003. Our program includes a Westminster Kennel Club Best of Opposite Sex winner and a Best in Show winner at 4 months old. Virginia families can visit our kennel, meet our dogs, and pick up their puppy in person.

Why Virginia Families Choose Apexx Akitas
Championship Quality for the Wealthiest Zip Codes in America

Apexx Akitas is one of the closest championship-level American Akita breeding programs to Virginia, located approximately four and a half hours north via I-95. With 10 AKC Champions and Grand Champions produced since 2003, including a Westminster Kennel Club Best of Opposite Sex winner, Apexx Akitas offers Virginia families a level of verified breeding quality that is not available from breeders within the state.

Northern Virginia is home to some of the highest household incomes in the country. Fairfax County, Loudoun County, and Arlington consistently rank among the wealthiest jurisdictions in the United States. The families who contact us from these areas are senior government officials, defense industry executives, technology professionals at companies like Amazon, Capital One, and Booz Allen Hamilton, and private practice attorneys and physicians. These buyers expect the same level of documentation and transparency from a breeder that they expect from every other significant investment they make.

Our program delivers exactly that. Grand Champion Asa, the foundation sire whose Grand Championship was earned competing against champions across the northeast. Champion Esther, who earned Best of Opposite Sex at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Champion Torro and Champion Bengal, the sire and dam of our current litter. And Champion Ash, who won Best in Show at just 4 months old against 76 entered puppies. Every one of these dogs carries full OFA clearances across hips, elbows, thyroid, eyes, and cardiac evaluations. Every title and every clearance is publicly verifiable. We do not ask you to trust us. We ask you to verify us.

What Makes Apexx Akitas Different
The Standard Virginia Buyers Should Demand

Virginia buyers, especially in the Northern Virginia corridor, are accustomed to evaluating credentials before committing. Here is what you will find when you evaluate ours.

10 AKC Champions and Grand Champions produced, with 3 more currently finishing. Our dogs have competed in AKC conformation shows and earned their titles by being independently evaluated against the breed standard by multiple licensed judges. Grand Champion Asa, Champion Esther (Westminster BOS winner), Champion Torro, Champion Bengal, and Champion Ash are among the titled dogs in our program. All titles are publicly verifiable on the AKC website.
Full OFA health clearances on every breeding dog. Hips, elbows, thyroid, eyes, and cardiac. All testing is performed under the supervision of Dr. Jonathan King, VMD, at Steinbach Veterinary Hospital in Bluebell, Pennsylvania, with over 30 years of OFA evaluation experience. Results are publicly searchable on ofa.org.
150+ placements nationwide since 2003. We have placed American Akitas with families across the country, including families in the D.C. metro and mid-Atlantic region. Every placement comes with lifetime breeder support. Your relationship with Apexx Akitas does not end when the puppy leaves our property.
Early socialization from birth. Every Apexx Akitas puppy is handled daily from birth, exposed to household sounds, different surfaces, and multiple people before placement. The critical socialization window between 8 and 16 weeks determines the adult dog's temperament more than any other single factor.

The American Akita in Virginia
Why This Breed Fits the Virginia Lifestyle

The American Akita is an excellent fit for Virginia homes that offer a securely fenced yard, consistent daily structure, and an owner who understands the commitment a large, intelligent, independent breed requires. Virginia's climate, property sizes, and family demographics create a strong environment for the breed.

Virginia's four-season climate works well for the American Akita. The breed carries a dense double coat that provides natural insulation during colder months, and Virginia's winters give the dog seasonal variation without the extreme conditions of far northern states. Summers in Northern Virginia and the Tidewater area can be hot and humid, which requires the same standard precautions any responsible owner takes with a double-coated breed: air conditioning, fresh water, and limiting outdoor activity during peak afternoon heat. With those basics in place, Virginia Akitas do well year-round.

Northern Virginia's suburban properties in Fairfax County, Loudoun County, and Prince William County typically offer the lot sizes and fenced yard configurations this breed requires. A securely fenced yard is not optional for an American Akita. The breed's independent nature means that even a well-trained dog should not be trusted off-leash in an unfenced area. Virginia's suburban and semi-rural properties throughout the state are well suited to this requirement.

The Virginia buyer profile aligns naturally with what makes Akita ownership successful. Dual-income professional households with structured schedules, clear expectations, and the resources to invest in proper veterinary care, training, and a premium diet produce the best outcomes with this breed. That describes a significant portion of the families we hear from in Northern Virginia, and it is one of the reasons we are confident in recommending the breed to serious buyers in this market.

How It Works
From First Contact to Bringing Your Puppy Home

Step 1: Submit a Puppy Application

Every placement begins with our application. I review every application personally and use it to understand your household, your experience with dogs, your living situation, and what you are looking for in an American Akita. Not every applicant is approved. The right match between puppy and family matters more than the sale.

Step 2: Phone Conversation

After reviewing your application, I will call you directly. This is a two-way conversation about your family, your goals, and whether an Apexx Akitas puppy is the right fit for your home. Virginia families typically come to this conversation well-prepared with specific questions. I welcome that level of diligence and will match it.

Step 3: Visit the Kennel

Virginia families are strongly encouraged to visit our kennel in Wantage, New Jersey. You will meet the parents of your puppy, see how our dogs are raised, and experience their temperament firsthand. For Northern Virginia families, this is about a 4.5-hour drive. Many families make it a weekend trip and are glad they did. Seeing the dogs in person tells you more about our program in 30 minutes than any website can.

Step 4: Puppy Selection and Placement

When your puppy is ready for placement at 8 to 10 weeks, you will pick up in person. Your puppy goes home with AKC registration papers, a health certificate from our veterinarian, a feeding and care guide, and my direct phone number for lifetime support. The drive home to Virginia is comfortable, and your puppy will be settling into your home by the end of the day.
