The moment a new owner meets her Apexx Akitas puppy. This is what 20 years of breeding for the right families looks like.
Apexx Akitas is an AKC-registered American Akita breeding program located in Sussex County, New Jersey, approximately three hours from the Boston metro area and most of Massachusetts. We have produced 10 AKC Champions and Grand Champions to date, with three more dogs currently finishing their titles. Every breeding dog in our program carries an AKC Championship or Grand Championship title and has passed all five OFA health clearances. We have placed over 150 American Akitas with families nationwide since 2003, including families in Massachusetts. Our program includes a Westminster Kennel Club Best of Opposite Sex winner and a Best in Show winner at 4 months old.
Apexx Akitas is one of the closest championship-level American Akita breeding programs to Massachusetts, located approximately three hours from the Boston metro area. With 10 AKC Champions and Grand Champions produced since 2003, including a Westminster Kennel Club Best of Opposite Sex winner, Apexx Akitas offers Massachusetts families a level of breeding quality that is exceptionally difficult to find anywhere in New England.
Massachusetts has the highest median household income of any state in the country. The families who contact us from the Boston metro, the North Shore, the South Shore, Worcester County, and western Massachusetts are serious buyers who do their research. They are not looking for the cheapest puppy available. They are looking for a breeder who can demonstrate, with verifiable documentation, that the puppy they take home comes from structurally correct, health-tested, temperament-verified parents. That is exactly what Apexx Akitas provides.
Our program includes Grand Champion Asa, the foundation sire whose Grand Championship was earned competing against champions across the northeast. Champion Esther, who earned Best of Opposite Sex at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Champion Torro and Champion Bengal, the sire and dam of our current litter. And Champion Ash, who won Best in Show at just 4 months old against 76 entered puppies. Every one of these dogs carries full OFA clearances across hips, elbows, thyroid, eyes, and cardiac evaluations.

We have already placed American Akitas with Massachusetts families. Fab, a male sired by Champion Ash, went home with his owner Aedome in Massachusetts and is thriving. That placement is a direct example of what Massachusetts buyers can expect from our program: a puppy from champion, health-tested parents, placed with personal attention, and supported for the life of the dog.

Our kennel is located in Wantage, New Jersey, in the northwest corner of the state near the New York border. The drive from most Massachusetts locations follows I-90 to I-84 to Route 206. It is a straightforward highway drive with no city traffic until you are nearly at our door.
Every family that purchases an Apexx Akitas puppy is welcome and encouraged to visit the kennel before making their decision. You will meet the parents of your puppy, see the environment they are raised in, and talk with me directly about the breed, the bloodlines, and what to expect. Many Massachusetts families make the drive down on a Saturday morning and are back home by early afternoon. Several have told me the visit was the moment they knew this was the right breeder for them.
Massachusetts buyers tend to be thorough researchers. You are comparing breeders, checking credentials, reading reviews, and verifying claims. Here is what you will find when you verify ours.

The American Akita is an excellent fit for Massachusetts homes with a securely fenced yard, consistent structure, and owners who understand the commitment a large, intelligent, independent breed requires. Massachusetts offers one of the best climates and living environments in the country for this breed.
The American Akita was developed for cold weather. The breed carries a dense double coat that provides natural insulation against harsh winters. Massachusetts winters are not just tolerable for this breed. They are ideal. Your Akita will be at its most energetic and comfortable in the cold months, and the New England seasons give the dog the natural coat cycle it was built for. Summer heat requires standard precautions, air conditioning and avoiding midday exercise in July and August, but Massachusetts summers are far more manageable than the southern states where heat is a genuine health risk for double-coated breeds.

Massachusetts property sizes, particularly in the suburbs west and north of Boston, in the Pioneer Valley, and throughout Worcester County, provide the kind of space this breed benefits from. A securely fenced yard is not optional for an American Akita. The breed's independent nature means that even a well-trained dog should not be trusted off-leash in an unfenced area. Massachusetts homes with quarter-acre lots and larger are well suited to the breed's needs.
The state's culture of education and thorough research works in your favor as a buyer. Massachusetts families consistently arrive at our kennel having already read our blog posts, verified our OFA clearances, and prepared thoughtful questions about the breed. That level of preparation is exactly what responsible breeders want to see, and it is one of the reasons Massachusetts placements have been among our most successful.

Every placement begins with our application. I review every application personally and use it to understand your household, your experience with dogs, your living situation, and what you are looking for in an American Akita. Not every applicant is approved. The right match between puppy and family matters more than the sale.
After reviewing your application, I will call you directly. This is a two-way conversation. I want to hear about your family, answer your questions about the breed, and make sure we are both confident that an Apexx Akitas puppy is the right fit for your home. Massachusetts families typically bring excellent questions to this call, and I am happy to spend the time it takes to answer all of them.
Massachusetts families are strongly encouraged to visit our kennel in Wantage, New Jersey. You will meet the parents of your puppy, see how our dogs are raised, and experience their temperament firsthand. For western Massachusetts families, this is about a 2-hour drive. For Boston area families, about 3 hours. Many families make it a day trip and tell me afterward that the visit was the deciding factor.
When your puppy is ready for placement at 8 to 10 weeks, you will pick up in person. Your puppy goes home with AKC registration papers, a health certificate from our veterinarian, a feeding and care guide, and my direct phone number for lifetime support. The drive home to Massachusetts is comfortable and your puppy will be settling into your home before the end of the day.
