Why Apexx Akitas is Your Trusted American Akita Breeder

Not all Akita breeders operate with the same standards. Apexx Akitas stands apart through verifiable experience, transparent practices, and an unwavering commitment to the long-term wellbeing of every puppy we produce. Here’s what makes us different:

  20+ Years of Breeding Excellence

Since 2003, Apexx Akitas has been dedicated exclusively to preserving and improving the American Akita breed. Over two decades, we’ve developed deep expertise in genetics, temperament evaluation, health testing protocols, and puppy development that simply cannot be rushed. While many breeders come and go, our longevity reflects our commitment to doing this right, not chasing profits.

Our experience means we can predict outcomes, identify subtle health or temperament concerns early, and make breeding decisions based on decades of documented results rather than guesswork.

  150+ Puppies Successfully Placed Nationwide

Apexx Akitas has placed over 150 American Akita puppies with families across the United States, from California to Pennsylvania, from Texas to Washington State. This national footprint demonstrates that families actively seek us out based on reputation, not just proximity.

Every placement represents a family who researched extensively, compared multiple breeders, and chose Apexx Akitas for our proven track record of producing sound, healthy, well-tempered American Akitas. Our puppies thrive in diverse climates and lifestyles, testament to the genetic soundness and early development foundation we provide.

  80% Long-Term Family Contact Rate

Here’s a statistic no other breeder highlights: we maintain active contact with 80% of our puppy families years after placement. This isn’t by accident — it’s by design. We genuinely care about the lifelong outcomes of every dog we produce.

Families return to us for advice, share milestone photos, provide health updates, and often come back for a second Apexx Akita. This sustained relationship proves our commitment extends far beyond the sale. It also provides us with invaluable long-term health and temperament data that informs our breeding decisions, creating a continuous improvement cycle that benefits every generation.

Why this matters to you: Breeders who disappear after the sale have something to hide. Our 80% contact rate proves we stand behind every dog we produce, for life.

  Champion Bloodlines with Proven Performance

Our American Akita puppies for sale come from a foundation of American and International Champions. We’re not breeding pet-quality dogs and calling them “champion lines” — our breeding dogs actively compete and win in AKC conformation shows, proving they meet the breed standard in structure, movement, and type.

Recent champion bloodlines in our program include:

  • American Champion “Kostic” – Multiple Best of Breed wins, excellent hip/elbow clearances
  • Champion Dam “Rahni” – Producer of show-quality offspring, exceptional temperament
  • Foundation lines tracing to notable American Akita champions of the past decade

Why champion bloodlines matter: Show champions are evaluated by expert judges for correct structure, movement, coat, and temperament. Breeding from proven winners increases the likelihood of sound, healthy, correct puppies that embody the true American Akita.

  Comprehensive OFA Health Testing

Every breeding dog at Apexx Akitas receives complete OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) health clearances before ever producing a litter. This is non-negotiable. Our testing protocol includes:

  • Hip Dysplasia Screening – OFA radiographic evaluation (minimum rating: Good)
  • Elbow Dysplasia Screening – OFA radiographic evaluation (minimum rating: Normal)
  • Eye Examination – Annual CERF/OFA eye clearances by board-certified ophthalmologist
  • Thyroid Function – OFA thyroid panel to screen for autoimmune thyroiditis
  • Cardiac Evaluation – Basic cardiac screening

All health testing results are publicly verifiable on OFA.org using our dogs’ registered names. We hide nothing. This level of transparency is rare in Akita breeding and represents a significant financial investment in every litter we produce — but it’s the only ethical path forward.

The difference this makes: Hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia are painful, expensive conditions. By breeding only from OFA-certified parents, we dramatically reduce the risk your puppy will develop these debilitating genetic conditions.

  Limited, Intentional Breeding Program

Apexx Akitas produces only 3-4 carefully planned litters per year. This limited breeding schedule ensures:

  • Every puppy receives extensive individual attention during critical development periods
  • We never sacrifice quality for quantity or profit
  • Our female dogs have adequate rest and recovery between litters
  • Each litter is thoughtfully planned to advance specific breeding goals
  • We can provide intensive support to every puppy family simultaneously

This approach stands in stark contrast to puppy mills and high-volume breeders who prioritize production over quality. When you purchase from Apexx Akitas, you’re getting a puppy from a breeder who has the time and resources to do this right.

Raised in Our Home, Not Kennels

Our American Akita puppies are raised in our home environment, not isolated in kennel buildings. From birth through go-home day, puppies experience:

  • Daily household sounds (vacuum, TV, dishwasher, doorbell)
  • Multiple family members of different ages
  • Various floor surfaces and environments
  • Gentle handling and grooming from day one
  • Positive exposure to other well-socialized dogs
  • Age-appropriate play and mental stimulation

This home-rearing approach produces puppies who transition smoothly into family life because they’re already familiar with household rhythms, sounds, and routines. Kennel-raised puppies often struggle with basic household adaptation — our puppies don’t.

Our Comprehensive Puppy Development Program

The first eight weeks of a puppy’s life are the most critical for brain development, socialization, and lifelong temperament formation. At Apexx Akitas, we follow a structured, research-based early development protocol that gives your puppy the best possible start in life.

 Early Neurological Stimulation (Days 3-16)

Following the proven Bio Sensor program (also called “Super Dog” program), we perform five gentle exercises daily during the critical neurological development window:

  • Tactile stimulation between toes
  • Head held upright position
  • Head pointed downward position
  • Supine (on back) position
  • Thermal stimulation

Research shows these brief, controlled stressors improve cardiovascular performance, stronger heartbeat, stronger adrenal glands, more tolerance to stress, and greater resistance to disease. ENS puppies consistently outperform non-ENS puppies in problem-solving, confidence, and stress resilience.

  Comprehensive Socialization (Weeks 3-8)

During the critical socialization window, every Apexx Akita puppy experiences:

  • People Diversity: Men, women, children, elderly individuals, different voices and energy levels
  • Sound Conditioning: Vacuum cleaner, doorbell, television, music, outdoor sounds, thunderstorm recordings
  • Surface Exposure: Tile, carpet, grass, gravel, wood, plastic, metal grates
  • Novel Objects: Cardboard boxes, tunnels, different toys, household items
  • Environmental Changes: Different rooms, outdoor areas, weather conditions
  • Appropriate Dog Interaction: Mother, littermates, stable adult dogs (when safe)

This extensive socialization creates confident, resilient puppies who adapt easily to new situations rather than becoming fearful or reactive.

 Health Protocol

Every puppy receives:

  • Veterinary examination at 6-7 weeks by our licensed veterinarian
  • Age-appropriate vaccinations (first puppy shot at 6-7 weeks)
  • Multiple dewormings on veterinary-recommended schedule
  • Microchip implantation before go-home
  • Health certificate for travel (if shipping)
  • Complete health records provided to new families

 Foundation Training & Habits

By 8 weeks, Apexx Akita puppies have begun:

  • Crate Introduction: Positive association with crate as safe space
  • Potty Training Foundation: Designated elimination area, begin to show surface preference
  • Bite Inhibition: Appropriate mouthing pressure learned through littermate play
  • Handling Tolerance: Comfortable with paws touched, ears checked, gentle restraint
  • Grooming Exposure: Brushing, nail trimming, bathing experiences
  • Food Manners: Calm behavior around food bowls, comfortable with human approach during meals

These early training foundations make your job as the new owner significantly easier and set the stage for a well-mannered adult dog.

 Temperament Evaluation (Week 7)

At exactly 49 days (7 weeks), we conduct formal temperament testing on each puppy using a standardized evaluation protocol. This assessment measures:

  • Social attraction and confidence with people
  • Following behavior
  • Restraint tolerance
  • Social dominance tendencies
  • Elevation response (comfort when picked up)
  • Retrieving desire
  • Sound sensitivity
  • Sight sensitivity
  • Stability and startle recovery

Results guide our family matching process, ensuring each puppy goes to a home suited to their individual personality. A high-energy, independent puppy thrives in different circumstances than a gentle, people-oriented puppy — we make sure the match is right.

 Go-Home Preparation (Week 8)

When you pick up your Apexx Akita puppy at 8 weeks, you receive:

  • Complete health records and vaccination history
  • AKC registration application
  • Microchip registration paperwork
  • 4-generation pedigree
  • Puppy starter kit (current food, favorite toys, blanket with littermate scent)
  • Comprehensive puppy raising guide specific to American Akitas
  • Training resource recommendations
  • Lifetime breeder support contact information
  • Signed health guarantee and puppy contract

Purchase Process & Investment

We believe in complete transparency throughout the puppy purchase process. Here’s everything you need to know about reserving, purchasing, and bringing home your Apexx Akita puppy.

Step 1: Submit Your Application

Begin by completing our puppy application form. We ask about your experience with dogs, household situation, lifestyle, training plans, and expectations for your American Akita. This helps us determine if an Akita is the right fit for your family and identify which puppies might suit you best.

Timeline: We typically respond to applications within 24-48 hours. Approved applicants receive our current litter availability and can schedule a call or visit.

Step 2: Meet the Puppies (Optional but Recommended)

We welcome approved applicants to visit our home in Sussex County, New Jersey to meet available puppies and parent dogs. While not required (we work with families nationwide who cannot visit), meeting in person provides valuable insight into our program, facility, and the puppies’ personalities.

Virtual Option: For families outside the tri-state area, we provide detailed videos, photos, and live video calls to showcase puppies and answer questions.

Step 3: Puppy Selection & Reservation

Puppy selection happens at 7 weeks after temperament testing. We use a priority order system based on deposit date. However, this isn’t first-come-first-served on any puppy we actively guide families toward puppies that match their lifestyle, experience level, and expectations.

For example, a high-drive, confident puppy is ideal for an experienced owner interested in showing or advanced training, but might overwhelm a first-time owner seeking a calm companion. We prioritize good matches over quick sales.

Step 4: Deposit & Contract

To reserve your puppy, we require:

  • Deposit Amount: $500 (non-refundable once puppy is selected, applied toward final purchase price)
  • Payment Methods: PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, check, or cash
  • Contract: Review and sign our puppy purchase contract (available for review before deposit)

The deposit secures your specific puppy and confirms your commitment. Deposits for waitlist (before puppies are born) are fully refundable until you select a specific puppy.

Step 5: Updates & Communication

From reservation through go-home day, you’ll receive:

  • Weekly photo/video updates of your puppy’s development
  • Temperament test results and personality observations
  • Health records as they’re completed
  • Preparation guidance for your puppy’s arrival
  • Direct access to us for questions anytime

Step 6: Final Payment & Go-Home Day

Final Payment: Due 7 days before pickup, balance of purchase price minus deposit already paid

Go-Home Day: Puppies go home at 8 weeks of age. We schedule pickup appointments to ensure adequate time to review health records, care instructions, and answer final questions. Most families spend 45-60 minutes during pickup.

Transportation Options:

  • Pickup in Person: Families pick up puppy at our home (preferred)
  • Ground Transport: We work with trusted ground transport services for East Coast deliveries (additional fee applies)
  • Flight Nanny: For long-distance families, flight nanny service available (additional fee applies)
  • We Do Not Ship Cargo: We do not ship puppies as cargo for their safety and welfare

 Investment & What’s Included

Apexx Akitas Puppy Price Range: $3,500 – $5,000

Pricing varies based on:

  • Show vs Pet Quality: Show-quality puppies with championship potential are priced higher
  • Gender: Males and females may be priced differently based on demand
  • Markings & Color: Rare or highly desirable markings may affect price
  • Breeding Rights: Pet pricing includes spay/neuter requirement; full AKC registration for breeding is significantly higher and rarely granted

Every puppy purchase includes:

  •  AKC registration (limited registration for pet puppies)
  •  2-year genetic health guarantee
  •  Veterinary health examination and certificate
  •  Age-appropriate vaccinations
  •  Multiple dewormings
  •  Microchip implantation and registration
  •  4-generation pedigree
  •  Puppy starter kit (food, toys, blanket)
  •  Comprehensive puppy raising guide
  •  Lifetime breeder support
  •  Training resource recommendations
  •  Access to puppy alumni network

Understanding American Akita Puppy Pricing

You may find American Akita puppies advertised for $800-$1,500 from backyard breeders or puppy mills. Here’s what you’re NOT getting at that price point:

  •  OFA health testing (costs $800-1,200 per breeding dog)
  •  Champion bloodlines and proven genetics
  •  Early neurological stimulation
  •  Comprehensive socialization protocol
  •  Temperament testing and evaluation
  •  Breeder support after sale
  •  Health guarantee worth the paper it’s printed on
  •  Ethical breeding practices

Responsible breeding is expensive. The health testing alone for a single litter (sire and dam) costs $1,600-2,400. Quality nutrition, veterinary care, facility maintenance, puppy supplies, and our time investment are significant. When you purchase from Apexx Akitas, you’re investing in a healthy, well-bred, properly socialized puppy that will save you thousands in potential veterinary bills and behavioral issues down the road.

Lifetime Cost of American Akita Ownership

Beyond the purchase price, prospective owners should budget for:

  • First Year: $2,500-3,500 (spay/neuter, additional vaccinations, supplies, training classes, unexpected vet visits)
  • Annual Ongoing: $1,500-2,500 (food, routine vet care, preventatives, grooming supplies, toys, boarding/sitting as needed)
  • Lifetime (10-13 years): $20,000-35,000 estimated

Large breed ownership is a significant financial commitment. We want families to enter this relationship with eyes wide open and proper resources in place.

Health Guarantee & Lifetime Breeder Support

 Our 2-Year Genetic Health Guarantee

Every Apexx Akita puppy is backed by a comprehensive 2-year genetic health guarantee covering:

  • Hip Dysplasia: Crippling genetic condition affecting hip joints
  • Elbow Dysplasia: Painful elbow joint malformation
  • Other Congenital Defects: Heart defects, eye abnormalities, and other genetic conditions present at birth

What the Guarantee Covers:

If your Apexx Akita is diagnosed with a covered genetic health condition by a licensed veterinarian within the first 2 years of life, we will:

  • Option 1: Replace the puppy with a puppy from a current or future litter
  • Option 2: Refund the full purchase price

Important: We do NOT require you to return your dog to receive a replacement or refund. We understand that by the time a health condition is diagnosed, your dog is a beloved family member. The guarantee exists to make you whole financially and ensure you can provide necessary medical care, not to take away your companion.

Guarantee Conditions:

  • Diagnosis must be made by a licensed veterinarian with documentation
  • For hip/elbow dysplasia, OFA or PennHIP radiographs must confirm diagnosis
  • Dog must have been maintained at healthy weight and not over-exercised during growth period (we provide detailed exercise guidelines)
  • Regular veterinary care documentation required

What’s NOT Covered:

Our guarantee covers genetic/congenital conditions present at birth or destined to develop due to inherited factors. It does NOT cover:

  • Conditions resulting from injury, accident, or trauma
  • Conditions resulting from improper care, nutrition, or environment
  • Common puppy illnesses (intestinal parasites, kennel cough, etc.)
  • Conditions that develop after 2 years of age
  • Normal breed characteristics (e.g., Akitas can be prone to skin allergies — this is manageable and not covered)

Why We Can Offer This Guarantee: Our comprehensive health testing of all breeding dogs dramatically reduces the risk of genetic conditions. We’re confident enough in our breeding program to stand behind every puppy for 2 years. Breeders who don’t health test cannot make this promise — and often don’t.

Lifetime Breeder Support — Always Here for You

Your relationship with Apexx Akitas doesn’t end when you take your puppy home. We provide lifetime breeder support for every family:

  • Health Questions: Consultation on health concerns, second opinions, advice on symptoms or behaviors
  • Training Support: Guidance on training challenges, behavioral issues, and development milestones
  • Nutritional Advice: Recommendations on diet, supplements, weight management
  • Life Changes: Support during major life transitions (moving, new baby, other pets)
  • Veterinary Referrals: Recommendations for specialists if needed
  • Problem-Solving: Help with any issue you encounter throughout your dog’s life

How to Reach Us: Phone, text, email, or social media message — whatever works for you. We typically respond within a few hours during daytime, next morning for evening messages.

Many breeders disappear after the sale. We remain invested in every dog we produce throughout their entire life. This is the Apexx Akitas difference.

 Lifetime Return Policy

Life circumstances change, and we understand that sometimes families can no longer keep their Akita. We have a lifetime return policy for every dog we produce:

  • We will ALWAYS take back any Apexx Akita at any age, no questions asked
  • No Apexx Akita will ever end up in a shelter, rescue, or uncertain situation
  • We do not offer refunds for adult returns, but we will help rehome if that’s your preference
  • We can help facilitate rehoming to an approved family if surrender isn’t your choice

This policy protects the dogs we bring into the world. Every Apexx Akita deserves a stable, loving home for life — and if that can’t be with their original family, we ensure it’s with another carefully screened home or back with us.

What Sets Apexx Akitas Apart from Other Breeders

When researching reputable Akita breeders, you’ll encounter three main categories: puppy mills, backyard breeders, and responsible breeders. Here’s how to tell the difference — and why Apexx Akitas stands above even other responsible breeders.

 Apexx Akitas vs. Puppy Mills

FactorPuppy MillsApexx Akitas
Primary GoalProfit maximizationBreed preservation and puppy wellbeing
Health TestingNone or minimalComplete OFA clearances: hips, elbows, eyes, thyroid
Breeding FrequencyEvery heat cycle, multiple litters simultaneously3-4 carefully planned litters per year, adequate rest between
Living ConditionsKennels, cages, minimal human interactionHome-raised with constant family interaction

Health GuaranteeWeak or nonexistent2-year genetic health guarantee, replacement or refund
Post-Sale SupportDisappear after saleLifetime breeder support, 80% family contact rate
Buyer ScreeningWill sell to anyone with moneyThorough application, interview, home assessment

Red Flags for Puppy Mills: Always have puppies available, sell multiple breeds, won’t let you visit, ship puppies cargo, no health testing, no questions about your lifestyle, pressure to buy immediately.

 Apexx Akitas vs. Backyard Breeders

FactorBackyard BreedersApexx Akitas
ExperienceFirst litter or sporadic breeding20+ years dedicated to American Akitas
KnowledgeLimited understanding of genetics, health, temperamentExpert-level knowledge from two decades of study and practice
Health Testing“Vet-checked” but no genetic screeningComplete OFA clearances publicly verifiable
Breeding Stock QualityPet-quality dogs, “I want puppies like my dog”Champion bloodlines, proven show and performance records
Puppy DevelopmentMinimal intervention, “nature takes its course”Structured ENS, socialization, temperament testing protocol
PurposeExtra income, “good experience for kids,” accidentalBreed preservation, genetic improvement, ethical placement
Long-term CommitmentBreed once or twice, then stop20+ years and counting, lifetime support for all dogs

Red Flags for Backyard Breeders: Can’t explain pedigree or bloodlines, don’t know what OFA is, puppies are “vet checked” but parents not health tested, no structured socialization program, breeding “family pet” without showing or working the dog.

Apexx Akitas vs. Other Responsible Breeders

Even among responsible breeders who health test and show their dogs, Apexx Akitas stands out:

  • 80% Family Contact Rate: We maintain relationships with puppy families years later — most breeders lose contact after 6-12 months
  • 150+ Nationwide Placements: Proven track record across diverse climates and lifestyles
  • Two Decades of Experience: Longer than most active breeders, generational knowledge
  • Transparent Health Data: All OFA results publicly verifiable, nothing hidden
  • Comprehensive Socialization Protocol: ENS, temperament testing, structured development — not all breeders go this deep
  • Lifetime Support Commitment: We actually answer the phone years later — try that with most breeders
  • Limited Breeding Program: 3-4 litters annually ensures quality over quantity

How to Identify a Truly Reputable Akita Breeder

When researching breeders, ask these questions. A responsible breeder will have clear, confident answers:

  1. Can I see the OFA results for both parents? (Should be publicly searchable on OFA.org)
  2. Can I visit and meet the puppies and at least one parent? (Answer should be yes)
  3. What health guarantee do you offer? (Should be at least 1-2 years for genetic conditions)
  4. What happens if I can no longer keep the dog? (Should take the dog back, any age)
  5. What early socialization do puppies receive? (Should have specific protocol, not vague answers)
  6. How do you select which dogs to breed? (Should discuss structure, health, temperament, genetic diversity)
  7. Can you provide references from past puppy buyers? (Should gladly connect you with previous clients)
  8. What support do you provide after the sale? (Should offer lifetime availability)
  9. Why did you breed this particular litter? (Should have specific goals beyond “to have puppies”)
  10. How many litters do you produce per year? (Should be limited, not constant production)

Apexx Akitas answers all these questions with complete transparency. If a breeder gets defensive, evasive, or can’t answer clearly — that’s your red flag.

Preparing for Your American Akita Puppy

Bringing home an American Akita puppy requires preparation. Here’s what you need to know and have ready before your go-home day.

 Essential Supplies (Purchase Before Pickup)

  • Crate: 48″ extra-large dog crate (adult size — puppy will grow into it). Wire crates allow airflow and visibility.
  • Exercise Pen: For safe contained area when you can’t directly supervise
  • Food & Water Bowls: Stainless steel, elevated stands optional but helpful for large breeds
  • Puppy Food: We’ll provide current brand — continue for at least 2 weeks before transitioning
  • Collar & Leash: Adjustable puppy collar, 6-foot leash (not retractable)
  • ID Tag: With your phone number, even before first walk
  • Toys: Variety of chew toys (Kongs, Nylabones), soft toys for comfort, puzzle toys for mental stimulation
  • Grooming Supplies: Brush, nail clippers, puppy shampoo
  • Cleaning Supplies: Enzymatic cleaner for accidents, paper towels
  • Puppy Pads: Optional for early potty training
  • Baby Gates: To limit access to certain areas

  Home Preparation

  • Puppy-Proof Your Space: Remove electrical cords, toxic plants, small objects, secure cabinets with chemicals
  • Designate Potty Area: Choose specific outdoor spot for elimination, always take puppy to same area
  • Create Safe Zones: Set up crate and puppy zone before arrival
  • Remove Hazards: Secure trash cans, remove choking hazards, block off stairs initially
  • Plan Sleeping Arrangement: Will puppy sleep in crate in your bedroom? Decide in advance

 First Week Expectations

The first week is critical for establishing routines and bonding. Expect:

  • Frequent Potty Breaks: Every 2-3 hours, immediately after eating/drinking/sleeping/playing
  • Limited Sleep: Puppies may whine at night initially — this is normal and temporary
  • Accident Cleanup: Expect accidents despite your best efforts — stay patient and consistent
  • Lots of Naps: Puppies sleep 18-20 hours daily — don’t over-stimulate
  • Gentle Exploration: Let puppy adjust gradually, don’t overwhelm with visitors immediately
  • Consistent Routine: Feed at same times, potty breaks on schedule, predictable daily rhythm

Common First-Week Mistakes to Avoid:

  •  Too much freedom too soon — limit access until housetraining established
  •  Inconsistent potty schedule — this extends housetraining timeline
  •  Leaving puppy alone for long periods immediately — separation anxiety risk
  •  Too many visitors and stimulation — causes stress and inhibits bonding
  •  Harsh corrections for accidents — positive reinforcement works better
  •  Not enforcing nap time — overtired puppies are difficult puppies

 First Veterinary Visit

Schedule a wellness check with your veterinarian within 48-72 hours of bringing puppy home. This satisfies most health guarantee requirements and establishes your vet relationship. Bring:

  • All health records we provide
  • List of questions or concerns
  • Current food brand information

Your vet will examine puppy, review vaccination schedule, discuss parasite prevention, and answer your questions.

 Training from Day One

Training begins immediately, even at 8 weeks:

  • Name Recognition: Use puppy’s name positively and often
  • Crate Training: Make crate a positive space, never punishment
  • Housetraining: Consistent schedule, immediate reward for outdoor elimination
  • Basic Manners: “Sit” for meals, calm greetings, no jumping
  • Handling Exercises: Touch paws, ears, mouth daily — prepares for grooming and vet visits
  • Socialization Continuation: Safely expose to new sights, sounds, people (after vet clearance)

We provide a comprehensive training guide and resource list. Consider enrolling in puppy kindergarten class around 10-12 weeks (after vaccination protocol allows).

Full breeding rights are rarely granted and significantly increase the price. Every puppy includes the same comprehensive health guarantee, early development program, and lifetime support regardless of price point.

What’s included in the purchase price?

Every Apexx Akita puppy comes with: AKC registration papers, 2-year genetic health guarantee, complete health records, current vaccinations, multiple dewormings, microchip implantation (if desired), 4-generation pedigree (upon Request), puppy starter kit (food, toys, blanket with littermate scent), comprehensive raising guide, and lifetime breeder support. We also provide training resources and access to our puppy alumni network.

What is your deposit amount and when is it due?

We require a $500 deposit to reserve a specific puppy. Deposits are accepted via PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, check, or cash. Once you select a specific puppy (at 7 weeks after temperament testing), the deposit is non-refundable and applied toward your final purchase price. Waitlist deposits (before puppies are born) are fully refundable. Final payment is due 7 days before pickup.

How do I reserve a puppy?

First, submit our puppy application. Once approved, you can place a deposit to join our waitlist or reserve from a current litter. Puppy selection happens at 7 weeks based on temperament testing results. We use a priority system based on deposit date, but actively guide families toward puppies that match their lifestyle and experience level rather than pure first-come-first-served.

Do I get to choose my puppy or do you match us?

It’s a collaborative process. At 7 weeks, we conduct formal temperament testing on each puppy and share detailed results with waitlist families. We discuss each puppy’s personality, energy level, confidence, and traits. Based on your application information (experience level, lifestyle, expectations), we guide you toward puppies that will thrive in your home. You make the final choice, but with our expert guidance to ensure a good match. Proper matching reduces the likelihood of returns and creates better lifelong outcomes.

How long is the waitlist for puppies?

Waitlist timing varies depending on litter plans and current demand. We produce 3-4 litters per year, so wait times typically range from 2-6 months. Families on our waitlist receive priority notification when new litters are planned or born. We’re honest about timelines and never overpromise availability. If you need a puppy urgently, we can sometimes recommend other reputable breeders with current availability.

What is your cancellation and refund policy?

Waitlist deposits (before selecting a specific puppy) are not refundable but transferrable to a future litter if you change your mind. Once you’ve selected a specific puppy at 7 weeks, the deposit becomes non-refundable as we’ve now committed that puppy to you and turned away other interested families. However, if extraordinary circumstances arise (medical emergency, unexpected life change), we work with families on a case-by-case basis and may allow transfer to a future litter rather than forfeiting the deposit entirely.

  Health & Guarantee Questions

What health guarantee do you offer?

Every Apexx Akita comes with a 2-year genetic health guarantee covering hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and other congenital defects. If a covered condition is diagnosed by a licensed veterinarian within 2 years, we’ll either replace the puppy from a current/future litter or refund the purchase price, your choice. Importantly, we do NOT require you to return your dog to receive the guarantee benefits. We understand they’re family by that point and the guarantee exists to help you financially, not take away your companion.

What health testing do the parent dogs have?

Every Apexx Akitas breeding dog has complete OFA clearances including: Hip radiographs (minimum rating: Good), Elbow radiographs (minimum rating: Normal), Annual eye examinations by board-certified ophthalmologist (CERF/OFA), Thyroid panel screening for autoimmune thyroiditis, and Basic cardiac evaluation. All results are publicly verifiable on OFA.org using the dog’s registered name. We hide nothing and encourage buyers to verify our claims independently.

What health checks do puppies receive before going home?

At 6-7 weeks, every puppy receives: Complete physical examination by our licensed veterinarian, First puppy vaccination (DHPP), Multiple dewormings on veterinary schedule, Microchip implantation, and Health certificate if shipping/transporting. You receive complete health records at pickup showing all veterinary care provided.

Are puppies vaccinated and dewormed?

Yes. Puppies receive their first DHPP vaccination at 6-7 weeks before going home, plus multiple dewormings starting at 2 weeks and repeated every 2 weeks through go-home day. You’ll receive a vaccination record showing what’s been done and a schedule for future vaccinations to discuss with your veterinarian. Puppies are NOT fully vaccinated at 8 weeks, they’ll need booster shots at 10-12 weeks and 14-16 weeks as recommended by your vet.

What happens if my puppy develops a genetic health issue?

Contact us immediately with the diagnosis from your veterinarian. We’ll review the medical records and work with you to determine next steps under the health guarantee. For covered conditions diagnosed within 2 years, you can choose a replacement puppy or full refund. We also provide consultation and support for non-covered health issues that arise, you’re not alone in managing your dog’s health. Many families maintain contact with us for health advice throughout their Akita’s entire life.

Do you offer any health guarantees beyond 2 years?

The formal written guarantee covers 2 years for genetic conditions. However, our lifetime support commitment means we’re here to consult on health issues throughout your dog’s life. If a pattern of genetic health issues emerges in a particular breeding line (extremely rare with our health testing), we take responsibility ethically even beyond the guarantee period. We’ve been breeding for 20+ years and our reputation matters more than short-term profit.

  Puppy Raising & Development Questions

At what age can I bring my puppy home?

Puppies go home at exactly 8 weeks of age. This timing is optimal for socialization, immune system development, and legal requirements in most states. We do not release puppies younger than 8 weeks under any circumstances. Puppies taken too early miss critical learning from mother and littermates and have higher rates of behavioral issues. The extra days matter.

Are puppies socialized before going home?

Extensively. Our socialization protocol includes: Early Neurological Stimulation (days 3-16) using the Bio Sensor program, daily handling by multiple people, exposure to household sounds (vacuum, TV, doorbell, music), multiple surface types (tile, carpet, grass, gravel), novel objects and environments, age-appropriate interaction with stable adult dogs, and introduction to children under supervision. By 8 weeks, Apexx Akita puppies have experienced more varied stimuli than many adult dogs.

Will my puppy be potty trained?

Puppies are not fully potty trained at 8 weeks, but we provide a strong foundation. By go-home day, puppies have begun to develop surface preference (prefer to eliminate on grass/outdoor surfaces) and understand the concept of a designated potty area. They’re crate trained enough to hold it overnight in a crate. However, YOU must continue consistent housetraining once puppy arrives. With proper consistency, most puppies are reliably housetrained by 4-5 months. Expecting an 8-week-old puppy to be fully potty trained is unrealistic.

What early training do puppies receive?

Beyond socialization, puppies learn: Positive crate association (crate is safe space, not punishment), handling tolerance for grooming and vet exams, basic food manners (calm around food bowls), gentle mouthing and bite inhibition through littermate play, exposure to collar and leash, and name recognition. These foundations make your training job easier. We provide a detailed training guide and resources for continuing puppy education.

  Breeder & Facility Questions

How long have you been breeding American Akitas?

Apexx Akitas was founded in 2003, giving us 20+ years of dedicated experience with American Akitas exclusively. We don’t breed multiple breeds. Our singular focus is preserving and improving the American Akita. This depth of experience in one breed allows us to make informed breeding decisions based on decades of tracked outcomes rather than trial and error.

Are you AKC registered?

Yes. All our breeding dogs are AKC registered and all puppies receive AKC registration papers (limited registration for pet puppies, full registration rarely granted for breeding). We follow AKC guidelines for responsible breeding. However, AKC registration alone doesn’t make someone a good breeder. It just means the dogs are purebred. Our health testing, experience, and practices go far beyond minimum AKC requirements.

Can I visit to see the puppies and parents?

Absolutely. We welcome approved applicants to visit our home in New Jersey to meet puppies and parent dogs. Visits must be scheduled in advance to ensure we’re available and puppies are at an appropriate age for visitor exposure. For families too far to visit, we provide extensive photos, videos, and live video calls. A reputable breeder should always allow visits. If someone won’t let you see where puppies are raised, that’s a major red flag.

Do you offer lifetime support?

Yes. Lifetime breeder support is included for every puppy we sell. This means you can contact us for advice, questions, or concerns throughout your dog’s entire life. We maintain an 80% contact rate with puppy families years after purchase because we genuinely care about long-term outcomes. Many families text us photos and updates regularly. Our support isn’t just a promise on paper, it’s demonstrated by two decades of sustained relationships with our puppy families.

What if I can no longer keep my dog?

We have a lifetime return policy. We will take back any Apexx Akita at any age, any reason, no questions asked. No Apexx Akita will ever end up in a shelter or rescue if we can prevent it. While we don’t offer refunds for adult returns, we’ll either keep the dog ourselves or carefully rehome to an approved family. If you prefer to rehome directly, we’ll help you screen potential homes. The dogs we produce are our responsibility for life.

Can I get references from past puppy buyers?

Absolutely. We’re happy to connect you with previous puppy buyers who can share their firsthand experience. You can also read testimonials on our testimonials page and see photos/updates from Apexx Akita families on our photo gallery. We encourage prospective buyers to do their due diligence and talk to our clients.

  Breed-Specific Questions

What’s the difference between American and Japanese Akitas?

American Akitas and Japanese Akitas (also called Akita Inu) are related but distinct breeds recognized separately by most major kennel clubs (though not by AKC, which groups them together). Key differences:

  • Size: American Akitas are larger and heavier (70-130 lbs) vs Japanese Akitas (typically 65-100 lbs)
  • Head: Americans have broader, bear-like heads; Japanese have more fox-like heads
  • Colors: Americans come in all colors including pinto; Japanese are limited to red, white, and brindle
  • Temperament: Americans tend to be more guardian-oriented; Japanese are slightly less assertive
  • History: Breeds diverged after WWII with different breeding goals

Apexx Akitas breeds exclusively American Akitas, the larger, more diverse bear-headed type.

Are American Akitas good family dogs?

American Akitas can be excellent family dogs with proper breeding, socialization, and training, but they’re not for every family. They’re best suited for: experienced dog owners (ideally with large breed experience), families with older children (10+), homes with secure fencing, families committed to training and socialization, and those seeking a loyal, protective companion. They’re NOT ideal for: first-time dog owners with no large breed experience, families with very young children, apartment living without access to outdoor space (though it’s possible with commitment), or owners who want an off-leash hiking companion (high prey drive). Properly raised Apexx Akitas are dignified, loyal, affectionate with family, and excellent with children in their household.

How big will my puppy get?

American Akitas are a large breed. Males typically reach 100-130 lbs and 26-28 inches at the shoulder. Females typically reach 70-100 lbs and 24-26 inches. Individual puppies may fall outside these ranges. We can provide more specific estimates based on the puppy’s parents and pedigree, but genetics only predicts so much, nutrition and exercise during growth also play a role. Plan for a large, powerful adult dog regardless.

What’s the temperament of your bloodlines?

We breed for the traditional American Akita temperament: dignified, loyal, reserved with strangers, protective of family, confident but not aggressive. Our lines are known for: excellent family bonds and affection with their people, stable temperament in home environment, appropriate wariness of strangers without fear or aggression, trainability and food motivation, and reduced dog-aggression compared to some Akita lines (though still present). We specifically avoid: fear-based aggression, human aggression, extreme shyness, hyperactivity, or unstable temperament. Temperament selection is as important as health and structure in our breeding program.

Do American Akitas get along with other pets?

It depends. American Akitas often have high prey drive and can be same-sex aggressive with other dogs. Many live successfully with opposite-sex dogs, especially when raised together from puppyhood. Cats are hit-or-miss — some Apexx Akitas live peacefully with cats (we have documentation of this), but it requires early socialization and proper management. Small pets (rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens) are generally not safe due to prey drive. If you have existing pets, discuss this during your application. We can guide you toward puppies showing lower prey drive and better multi-pet potential based on early evaluation.

  Logistics & Transportation Questions

Do you ship puppies or is pickup only?

We prefer families pick up in person at our home in Sussex County, New Jersey (about 1 hour from NYC, Philadelphia, or northern Pennsylvania). This allows us to meet you, ensure proper transition, and review care instructions thoroughly. For families outside the tri-state area who cannot travel, we offer: Ground transport service via trusted pet transporters (East Coast primarily, additional fee applies), or Flight nanny service where a professional courier hand-carries puppy on a flight to your nearest major airport (additional fee applies). We do NOT ship puppies as cargo in the airplane hold, this is unsafe and traumatic for young puppies.

Where are you located?

Apexx Akitas is based in  New Jersey (northern NJ near the Pennsylvania and New York borders). We’re approximately: 1 hour from New York City, 1.5 hours from Philadelphia, 45 minutes from the Pennsylvania border, and 2-3 hours from Boston. Many families from Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Maryland make the drive to pick up their puppies. We serve families nationwide but are most accessible to the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.

Can I get references from people in my state?

Possibly. We’ve placed puppies in over 20 states across the US. If you let us know your location, we can check whether we have previous puppy families in your area willing to serve as references. Keep in mind that most of our placements are concentrated in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, so we may not have local references for every state. We’re always happy to connect you with families regardless of location to discuss their experience.

American Akita Buyer’s Guide: Making an Informed Decision

Purchasing an American Akita puppy is a 10-15 year commitment and significant financial investment. This guide helps you make an informed, responsible decision.

What to Look for in a Reputable Akita Breeder

  • Comprehensive health testing of all breeding dogs (OFA clearances minimum)
  • Willingness to show you the facility and let you meet parent dogs
  • Asks YOU questions and screens buyers carefully
  • Limited breeding  not constantly producing litters
  • Written health guarantee covering genetic conditions for at least 1-2 years
  • Lifetime return policy always takes their dogs back
  • Involvement in the breed through showing, club membership, or breed preservation activities
  • Transparent about challenges discusses both positives and potential difficulties of the breed
  • Provides references from previous buyers
  • Offers ongoing support and actually responds after the sale
  • Specializes in one or two breeds rather than producing many breeds
  • Proper socialization program with specific, documented protocol

Red Flags: When to Walk Away

Avoid breeders who:

  •  Won’t let you visit or see where puppies are raised
  •  Always have puppies available (sign of puppy mill)
  •  Breed multiple breeds (10+ breeds is a puppy mill)
  •  Can’t show OFA health clearances for parents
  •  Don’t ask YOU any questions about your lifestyle or home
  •  Will sell to anyone with money
  •  Ship puppies cargo in airplane holds
  •  Offer no health guarantee or a weak guarantee
  •  Pressure you to buy immediately
  •  Meet you in parking lots or other locations (not their home/facility)
  •  Can’t explain the pedigree or why they bred this litter
  •  Price is suspiciously low ($800-1,200 for American Akitas)
  •  Can’t or won’t provide references
  •  Are evasive or defensive when asked questions
  •  Won’t take the dog back if circumstances change

Trust your instincts. If something feels off, it probably is. A reputable breeder is transparent, patient with questions, and wants you to make an informed decision even if that means you choose a different breeder or wait longer.

  Questions Every Buyer Should Ask

Before committing to a breeder, ask these questions and evaluate the answers:

  1. Can I see the OFA results for both parents? (Should be public on OFA.org)
  2. Can I visit and meet the puppies and at least one parent?
  3. What health guarantee do you provide?
  4. What happens if I can no longer keep the dog?
  5. What socialization do puppies receive before 8 weeks?
  6. How do you temperament test and match puppies to families?
  7. Why did you breed this specific litter?
  8. How many litters do you produce per year?
  9. What support do you provide after the sale?
  10. Can you provide references from past buyers?
  11. What challenges should I expect with this breed? (Good breeders discuss challenges honestly)
  12. Are your dogs involved in conformation showing, performance events, or working roles?

Is an American Akita Right for You?

American Akitas are not the right breed for everyone. Honestly assess whether you’re prepared for:

  • Size and strength: 70-130 lb powerful dog that requires control
  • Training commitment: Intelligent but independent, requires consistent training
  • Socialization needs: Must be extensively socialized to prevent reactivity
  • Dog selectivity: Often same-sex aggressive, high prey drive with small animals
  • Exercise needs: Moderate energy but need daily exercise and mental stimulation
  • Grooming: Heavy seasonal shedding, “blowing coat” twice yearly
  • Protectiveness: Natural guardians — will protect territory and family
  • Stubbornness: Bred to think independently, not eager-to-please like retrievers
  • Financial commitment: $20,000-35,000 lifetime cost estimate
  • Time commitment: 10-13 year lifespan requiring daily care and attention

If you’re still excited about American Akitas after understanding the challenges, you may be an ideal owner. They’re extraordinarily loyal, dignified, affectionate with their families, and make impressive companions for the right homes.

Success Stories from Our Apexx Akita Families

Don’t just take our word for it, hear from families who’ve brought home Apexx Akita puppies and experienced the difference firsthand.

“We researched American Akita breeders for over six months before finding Apexx Akitas. Ron’s transparency, health testing, and genuine care for his dogs stood out immediately. Our Akita ‘Bear’ is now 4 years old, has never had a health issue, and is the most well-adjusted dog we’ve ever owned. Ron still checks in with us regularly and answered our panicked calls when Bear ate something he shouldn’t have at 6 months old. This is what responsible breeding looks like.”

Apexx Akita Family
                  Family with an Apexx Akita

“As first-time Akita owners, we were nervous about taking on such a powerful breed. Ron guided us toward ‘Luna,’ a female from his 2022 litter with a calmer temperament perfect for our lifestyle. She’s been everything we hoped for loyal, gentle with our teenage kids, and surprisingly easy to train thanks to the foundation Apexx Akitas provided. The socialization work Ron does in those first 8 weeks made all the difference.”

Happy family with American Akita puppy from Apexx Akitas breeding program"
Lifelong relationships, not just puppy placement”

“I grew up with American Akitas and knew what I was looking for in a breeder. Most breeders I contacted couldn’t tell me OFA ratings, breeding goals, or temperament testing protocols. Ron could answer every question instantly and in detail. ‘Titan’ from the Kostic x Rahni litter is exactly what the breed should be structurally sound, confident but stable, and showing championship potential. Already pointing toward his first show title.”

Apexx Akita winning Best Of Breed

“What sets Apexx Akitas apart is the long-term support. We hit a rough patch with adolescent behaviors around 10 months, and Ron talked us through it with specific advice tailored to ‘Kuma’s’ personality. He never made us feel like we were bothering him. Two years later, Kuma is a rock-solid family companion. The 80% contact rate isn’t marketing Ron genuinely stays involved with his puppies’ lives.”
